Leaving Santander

Having docked an hour late in Santander due to the weather, we disembarked without incident (apart from not realising that the crew had put the caravan’s handbrake on for us, and I couldn’t work out why we weren’t moving! Fortunately a neighbour spotted what was wrong and released it for us). We followed the sat nav out of Santander, only going round a couple of roundabouts twice, and an hour or so later arrived at our new site at San Vicente de la Barquera, about 35 miles from Santander. The forecast was for rain, but the weather is actually quite good with lots of warm sunshine. This area is very mountainous, and we can see snow on the tops of a couple of peaks in the Picos de Europa range so I guess it is pretty cold still up there. The site is great – friendly people and beautiful scenery, about 1km from the sea and a lovely wide sandy beach.

Our first pitch overseas – very busy eh?

Shopped at a supermarket in the nearest town Comillos, having waited for it to open by visiting a small bar and having a quick cerveza! We had a stroll around the beautiful old town admiring the buildings and browsing the various restaurants and shop windows. Then back to the caravan for some food – we’d struck lucky buying some local cheese made from cow, sheep and goats milk, it’s delicious. Grant had investigated the wine selection at the supermarket and chosen an unlabelled bottle of red for less than 1 euro (!) – it was surprisingly very drinkable! A great day and a lovely start to our adventure.
